The Netherlands based practice Studio Appelo have renovated and converted an old car garage into a family living space. The old garage is located in an old industrial plot in the eastern part of the old city center of Amsterdam. Using the open floor plan of the old industrial building, the designers have created a modern Y-shaped living area with sympathy to the heritage of the original building.
The interior space is divided into three zones: kitchen area, living and library space and children’s living areas. The kitchen is located on the more open and busier street side of the house and features a six meter long marble work-top. There is peaceful courtyard at the rear of the house which is easily reached through the glass doors.
Untreated concrete floors, textured plaster work and steel door and window frames help retain the industrial history of the building.
